Re-Programming Our Beliefs about Health and Aging

It is widely understood that your subconscious mind is what is often running your life, especially when it comes to something like your financial status.  There are numerous programs, books, and modalities, like Emotional Freedom Technique, attempting to reprogram your belief system around money, wealth, and prosperity.  Their popularity and suggests your subconscious blueprint can indeed be decoded and changed, for good.

Here are some ubiquitous subconscious thoughts and beliefs about money that you might recognize:

  • Money is the root of all evil.

  • Money doesn’t grow on trees.

  • Money won’t buy you happiness.

  • You should save it for a rainy day.

  • It takes money to make money

As a Zenshin Method practitioner, seeing these patterns around money made me start thinking about the pervasiveness of subconscious programming in other areas of our lives.

What about when it comes to our health and wellbeing?  What are some of the common underlying beliefs we have about aging?

Despite the fact that each of us is already magnificent, we constantly bombard our conscious and subconscious minds with negative and limiting beliefs about our own potential for healing and health, much like what we believe about money and prosperity.  My own father was a wealth of negative programming when it came to these health and aging stereotypes.  He often repeated sentiments like these:

  • Aging equals decline

  • Elderly people are decrepit

  • Aging slows you down and brings you misery

  • Pain and suffering accompany aging

On top of these negative aging beliefs, his thinking was completely controlled by the cultural dogma that our genes control our physical destiny.  This belief did not apply to other areas of his life, interestingly, but only to his physical health.  He was convinced that he was going to die early, because his father died young.  He thought he was going to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and other devastating neurodegenerative disorders, because his mother suffered from them.

Unfortunately, it was impossible for me to reprogram his fossilized dogmas.  To him, his genes were carved in stone, a “life sentence” that could not be repealed.  In fact he used to say to me from a young age, “I am sorry, but you will suffer from these conditions, too.”  That’s hardly the best way to help a 10 year-old understand her future potential.

Replacing his outdated, fatalistic programming with the updated and empowering science of epigenetics, unfortunately, couldn’t happen in time to reverse his physical decline.  He just wasn’t willing to participate fully in his own health, and he died sooner than “necessary”.  Watching him decay slowly from self-neglect for decades is one of the biggest reasons why I am so passionate about my work.

But, you are not “stuck” or “doomed” from the moment of your birth!  For example, your physical body is replacing and renewing itself constantly, from the small intestine’s epithelial lining, to the lungs, blood cells, and bones.  This and more happens all day, every day, so that every 7 to 10 years you have completely new cellular body.  And there are more cells in your body than stars in the galaxy—the Milky Way has approximately 400 BILLION stars, but your body contains around 100 TRILLION cells!

These are just a few examples of how mind-blowingly magnificent you are.

If you can believe science that your physical body is renewing, replacing, and reprogramming YOU constantly, AND you believe you can reprogram your thoughts around money, wealth, and other areas of your life, then WHY is it that when it comes to your own health it is somehow the outside of the realm of possibility?

We are the co-creators of our lives, and that includes our own health, not only our wealth and money.

My father is no longer here, but he was one of my greatest (and most difficult) teachers.  Although he never questioned health professionals or drug treatments he was given, or changed his own subconscious programming, I learned from him that I have the power to live my life differently—by questioning my own limiting beliefs.

So I would challenge you to find out more about your subconscious programming and how that might be holding you back from living your life to the fullest.

What do you think would shift in you, if you honestly listened to your deepest subconscious thoughts and started to reprogram them?

Read the Yale School of Public Health study about negative beliefs about aging and Alzheimer’s disease.  This might at least begin to shift your mind about aging.
